Come hear the words of Susan B. Anthony (Dee Owens), Lucretia Mott (Kate Cruikshank), Sojourner Truth (Val Haughton),
Carrie Chapman Catt (Margaret Joseph) along with their later counterparts Shirley Chisholm (Vi Taliaferro), Barbara Jordan (Doris Sims) and Margaret Sanger (Charlotte Zietlow) read by women of this community. All this interspersed with music by Lois Sabo-Skelton and a visual presentation created specially for this occasion by Sarah Sandberg. Those who have attended the read-through's so far have been deeply moved by the words, and you will, too.

March 26 2006 - The DWPAC held a fundraiser at the Players' Pub.

Performers are Rachel Caswell, Janice Jaffee and Monika Herzig - local well known women with incredible voices. Lisa Loew is a young voice major at Indiana University who is eager to make a difference with her support of the caucus. If you haven't heard Lois Sabo-Skelton make her violin tear at your heartstrings, you have missed an incredible experience. If you've never heard city councilmen Chris Gaal and Andy Ruff sing and play together, you've again, missed a local musical treat. We end with Hambone and Doc (yes, one of our local pediatricians!) locals who are anxious to entertain those supporters of Democratic women.

Speaker: Mary Dieter
On Friday, June 18, 2009, the DWC has a special luncheon planned that will focus on women and media. Our special speaker wasMary Dieter, a name familiar to many of us who read her daily columns in the Louisville Courier Journal for many years. Mary was more recently communications and press secretary for Governor Frank O'Bannon and covered that incredibly difficult job after he died in office in 2003. Mary is the President of MED Communications LLC, which focuses on writing and editing consultancy in the Indy area. She and her husband, Tim McClure, recently published a crime novel set in Indianapolis; it is called The McNaughton Rule.

OCTOBER 11, 2009! - CAMPAIGN FORUM AND LUNCH
The Campaign Forum lunch starts at noon on Sunday, September 20th at Affairs of the Sun Catering on 4th Street (across from WFHB) that will focus on women in the electoral and/or political process. This forum will examine the problems that women encounter in making the decision to run for office, getting the experience to do so, and issues in coordinating a campaign team, There is limited seating at this FREE lunch, so if you are considering a run for election in 2010.If you think you might want to run in the next city election, now's the time to prepare. If you are interested in helping recruit women and help them become candidates, this forum should help you give them the tools they need to get started. (Re-scheduled from September 9, 2009.)
Follow up from the October lunch:
On Sunday afternoon, October 11th, 38 women gathered for a lunch and forum on women in politics. A discussion of obstacles to women's participation in politics was followed by presentations of former candidates, campaign managers, and advisors. Attendees ranged in spectrum from teens to, well, older (!) women, from the experienced present and past office holders to political novices, to activists that now want to turn their passion into public service. At the end of the program, brainstorming provided the group with ideas for continued training, resources that need to be developed, and an interest in future sessions.

Special Lunch with Kate Michelman
On FRIDAY MARCH 25th, 11:30 AM to (approximately) 1:00 PM at the Lodge (101 E. 6th St.), you are invited to lunch with Kate Michelman! Ticket price for lunch is $18. Seats are limited, so reserve yours today!
For nearly 20 years, Kate Michelman served as President of NARAL Pro-Choice America, catapulting the organization to prominence as the nation's premier reproductive rights group. Under Kate's leadership, NARAL Pro-Choice America transformed the political debate and positioned a woman's freedom to choose as a fundamental American liberty.
Kate has worked closely with -- and her counsel has been sought by -- many of the most powerful leaders in America, from Senators to Cabinet Secretaries to Presidents. She successfully implemented grassroots and grasstops strategies to promote a political agenda to keep abortion legal while making it less necessary. She built NARAL Pro-Choice America into a dominant force in electoral politics at the state and federal levels. Vanity Fair Magazine named Kate one of America's 200 Women Legends. Washingtonian magazine named Michelman one of the capital's 100 most powerful women. The Hill named her one of the top grassroots/non-profit lobbyists. Fortune Magazine described NARAL Pro-Choice America under Kate's leadership as "one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America."
Early in her professional career, Michelman was a specialist in early childhood development, with a particular emphasis on developmentally disabled children. Building on her work with special-needs children in rural Pennsylvania on the edge of Appalachia, she developed a model multi-disciplinary diagnostic treatment program for developmentally disabled preschool children and their families that now serves as a model across the nation.
Michelman, who first honed her organizing skills in the civil-rights movement, became concerned about reproductive freedom after her own humiliating experience with a pre-Roe v. Wade abortion in 1970, which required her to obtain the consent of the husband who had deserted their family as well as a hospital panel comprised entirely of men.
Prior to joining NARAL Pro-Choice America in 1985, Michelman was executive director of Planned Parenthood in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where she expanded the range of reproductive health services available in the area. She also trained medical students and residents in child development as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine.

January 17, 2010 - FOLLOW-UP TRAINING
Our candidate follow-up training is now scheduled for January 17, 2010, from noon until no later than 3pm, at the Lodge, 101 E 6th Street. We will cover campaign plans, budgets, how to develop a message and stay on that message, forming a campaign team to help and the specific roles of that campaign team, fundraising and more. If you are considering a run for office and would like to learn more nuts and bolts, please consider attending. If you think you might like to help a woman run for election in 2010, please come and you might find a candidate that you’d like to help. The DWC is committed to making sure women are smart and effective campaigners
A report from the "Follow-up" Traning: Twenty very interested and motivated women got together for a Campaign Circuit Training Session. We went through 6 stations in small groups to learn about campaign plans, budgets, message development and media relations, campaign teams and how they can help a candidate, printed materials, and viability. Candidates were given some direction, volunteers hooked up with women they want to support, and really good discussions took place about the upcoming election and the campaign and election process in general. Thank you to the steering committee members who worked on materials and presentations: Susan Sandberg, Jill Jolliff, Charlotte Zietlow, Lu Cregar, Merridee LaMantia, Julie Thomas, Jillian Kinzie, Dee Owens and Regina Moore. It is of great importance to the Caucus that women work smart and present the best of campaigns in pursuit of our mission to increase the number of elected women in public service. We hope that we made a good dent in that work at this session.

Sunday, February 26, 2006 at the LODGE (101 E. 6th Street, Upstairs) and Tuesday, March 28th at the Monroe Public Library Auditorium.
The WomenSpeak Reader's Theater was created for our 85th anniversary celebration of Women's Suffrage last August. It was a program that included your friends and colleagues reading excerpts from speeches given by women through history, music, photos, all wrapped up in a Ken Burn's type production. Those who saw it in August thought it was truly amazing. Producer Susan Sandberg narrates us through women's history for a performance that is truly unique and inspirational. When you hear the words of Barbara Jordan, Susan B. Anthony, Shirley Chisholm, Eleanor Roosevelt read by your friends you'll be especially moved by the work women have done in the struggle for voting rights and human rights.
Bring your friends, mothers, sisters, daughters, husbands, boyfriends, sons! The February performance will be part of the community celebration of ArtsWeek. The March program will be part of Women's History Month celebrations in the community.
