Carole Scifres

Democratic Women's Caucus Director of Research

I earned a bachelor's, master's and doctorate in education at Indiana University as well as a degree in nursing from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. I have worked in international disaster relief with Doctors Without Borders, International Red Cross, Sisters Cities International and International Humanitarian Committee.

I cannot remember when I have not been engaged in the political process. I was involved in my Dad's campaigns for local office in Scott County, Indiana; he was defeated once, then never lost again. I worked on my husband's campaign when he ran for an elected office in his union - he won; I ran for an office in the teacher's union at Eastern Illinois University and won; of course both of us have walked picket lines for our respective unions.

I have worked on campaigns for several municipal candidates and state legislators, as well as congressional, senatorial and presidential campaigns, in Indiana, Illinois and Ohio. In the 2006 general election I housed nine members from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee for a couple of weeks to help with the election of Baron Hill. Although I have worked on campaigns in several capacities, I have very recently taken any training offered to enhance my skills at getting candidates elected: Emily's List in 2004; Camp Bayh in 2005, Democracy for America in 2007. Currently I am Vice Chair of Democracy for Monroe County, am a member of the steering committee for Verify the Vote Indiana, and chair a mayoral campaign.
