As a new decade ushers in limitless possibilities, you have been invited to the Monroe County History Center Museum for the annual Elizabeth Cady Stanton Gala, celebrating the pioneering suffragettes and their fight for equality. It is an elegant affair, where Washington insiders sip champagne with stunning socialites, mop topped British rockers dance with sultry mavens of Soul, and intellectual elite debate with roguish revolutionaries. Hidden among the ancient tomes and historic artifacts, are cryptic secrets, and mysterious untold stories.

After a week that saw the Trump Administration escalate its attacks on free speech, labeling journalists as “the enemy of the people,” denouncing FBI whistleblowers, and barring such well-respected news organizations as the New York Times and CNN from a White House press briefing, the topic of this month's Breakfast Meeting could not be more timely. Join us at the Village Deli on Friday, March 3, 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. as Jane Henegar, Director of the Indiana Affiliate of the ACLU, shares her perspectives and tells us how we can stay informed on civil liberties issues. From voting rights and free speech to reproductive freedom, LGBT rights, and immigrants' rights, the ACLU has been front and center in advocating for the freedoms that have made America great.

Due to the February meeting's overwhelming turnout by passionate, dedicated Democratic women and their friends, we've had conversations with the Village Deli about the layout and how we can accommodate more attendees, and we have a plan!

Unfortunately, yet another appalling Trump nominee was confirmed by the Senate last week--Jeff Sessions for Attorney General. The US will now have a chief law enforcement officer and legal adviser to the President who is racist and unlikely to enforce civil rights, does not believe in the dangers of global climate change, and has opposed almost every immigration bill proposed in the last twenty years that provided any path to citizenship. But the exciting news that came out of his confirmation hearings involved Elizabeth Warren, who once again showed her feistiness and demonstrated we can count on her to keep trying to shift Congress to the side of sanity. It was unbelievable that Mitch McConnell shut her up when she tried to read a 1986 letter by Coretta Scott King that talked about Mr. Sessions' flaws. Seriously? Was she inciting to violence or committing murder by elocution? Hardly. She was trying to save our Republic. See for yourself. After being silenced, Senator Warren left and read the letter outside the Senate chambers anyway. So there! Here's to courageous women role models who make us confident we can reach for the stars. We cannot be silenced.

Breakfast news for those of you who missed it.....
100+ People were present for Friday's Breakfast meeting at the Village Deli! We used every available chair, standing room and the overflow in the little room behind the main dining room!  Clearly women are motivated, fired up and ready to go! Picture below taken early in the program -- before people were standing in every empty space!
     Teri Kleine, Teri Bleuel and Nancy Hutchens clarified information about the Affordable Care Act, and what we will lose if the act is repealed and not replaced. We will send their handouts out in a separate newsletter later this week for you to have and use.
They related their experiences visiting offices, and offered to take groups to Indy to support the ACA. If you'd like to go in a group to visit Senator Donnelly's office in Indy about defending the Affordable Care Act (and Senator Young, if time permits) please email your name, contact number and days of the week and times you are available to go to: [email protected].

    •    Fundraising and Events - track goals, inspire attendees to donate; analyze and expand efforts; plan social events (movie nights, etc.)
    •    Communications (Monday Morning News, website, Facebook, Twitter, blog, etc) - outreach to build membership; inform current members; education; notification
    •    Training - prepare candidates as well as workers to help candidates and causes
    •    Membership - outreach, goals, retention, renewals

It has been a very long eight days… In fact it seems much longer than that… so much damage done in so little time. So many people acting in their own interests instead of the public good.
But there have been bright spots… the wonderful women’s rallies last weekend… a packed house for the Monroe County NOW call out, hundreds of Bloomingtonians marching in support of our Muslim and refugee neighbors… voices of support from around the world….

Members Terri Klein and Terri Bluel will update us on what is happening with the Affordable Care Act. As the Axios Vitals Newsletter pointed out this morning... "It took one travel ban to wipe Obamacare out of the news, but that's about to change thanks to some high-profile hearings on replacement ideas and Tuesday's Senate Finance Committee's confirmation vote on Tom Price. And let's not forget the big cliffhanger: Will there still be a last-minute signup surge on Tuesday as Obamacare open enrollment ends?"
Teri Bluel and Teri Klein have been working with various groups on the issues surrounding the Affordable Care Act – you know, the one that DJT wants to immediately repeal and replace…. - Teri and Teri have been working with a number of groups advocating for the improvement of the ACA, especially with regards to women’s health issues. They’ll tell us what they’ve learned in their petitioning, calling and visiting senators’ offices, and how we can stay on top of the issue for action when it’s needed.  If there’s one thing we’ve watched in the last 10 days, it’s that people all over are motivated and mobilized to push for the changes they want to see. That’s us!

A colleague in Estonia has been keeping me informed about international reactions to events in our country. Yesterday's postings appear below:

What angers you about the world you live in? What would you say to world leaders if you were given time with them?

     These are some of the questions playwright Rebecca Lenkiewicz is asking young women ahead of the Women’s March on London, part of a global movement of people taking to the street’s on the first day of Donald Trump’s presidency. She will shape a text from the contributions she receives, and a version will be read in front of the American Embassy on the day – January 21.
     More than 60 cities in 32 countries are marching in solidarity with a planned march in Washington, D.C., and the Facebook page for the London event already has 10,000 people listed as attending. London’s event counts Amnesty International, Liberty, Pride in London, Unite, and the Women’s Equality Party amongst their supporters, and celebrity supporters include Ian McKellen, Alexa Chung and Frankie Boyle."

THIS MARCH IS INCLUSIVE AND ALL ARE WELCOME.  
     On January 21 2017, the first day of Donald Trump’s Presidency, women-led marches, welcoming all participants, will take place across the world, with the largest expected in Washington, D.C.. We call on people of all genders to march in London as part of an international day of action in solidarity.
     We will march, wherever we march, for the protection of our fundamental rights and for the safeguarding of freedoms threatened by recent political events. We unite and stand together for the dignity and equality of all peoples, for the safety and health of our planet and for the strength of our vibrant and diverse communities.
     We will come together in the spirit of democracy, honouring the champions of human rights who have gone before us. Please spread the word, so that our numbers are too great to ignore and the message to the world is clear. The politics of fear and division have no place in 2017.

     Just an added note: lest we forget, our sisters in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Ukraine are facing the real possibility that Putin will seize the occasion of his good friend Donald’s presidency to send tanks into the Ukraine and the Baltic states. Trump has basically signed off on Russian’s intervention in eastern Ukraine as well as the annexation of the Crimea, and Newt Gingrich has declared Tallinn to be “a suburb of St. Petersburg.”
