Monthly Breakfast Follow-up
Thanks to all who attended last Friday's breakfast. It was a packed house with lots of new friends in attendance. We had a wonderful report from the chair of the Indiana Delegation to the Democratic National Convention, our own Senator Vi Simpson, on what it was like to be at this historic event. And our District 9 National Delegates, Cathi Crabtree, Jeanne Smith and Martha Hilderbrand, had their own unique perspectives. The biggest takeaways were first, how inspiring it was that the Indiana delegation came together after a divisive primary season to show their collective support for Hillary (Go Unity Team!), and second, how both Vi, who was honored and moved to be reading the Indiana delegate roll call, and Cathy, couldn't help but think of how proud their mothers would have been to see their daughters ushering in a new era for American women! Here's to all those proud mothers, whether they're with us or have passed on. This one's for YOU!!!
You can hear Cathi's and Jeanne's at the links below to their interviews on WFHB.

In other news from the breakfast--the DWC voted to endorse Holly Harvey for Judge. Go Holly!! Also, because of all the other excitement, we ran out of time for the Canvassing Training by Charlotte Zietlow and Regina Moore. But never fear, we will schedule it for another day and be sure to let you know.

A HISTORIC, LONG OVERDUE, DELICIOUSLY VINDICATING WEEK
It took nearly 100 years, but we have finally put a woman at the top of a US political party and just a smile and a handshake away from the ultimate prize--the American Presidency. OK--thousands of smiles and handshakes away, with some Trump and GOP slamming required along the way. But WOW is Hillary up for it. We couldn't have dreamt up a more competent, intelligent, experienced, persistent, hard-working, caring and genuine woman to represent the face of America. And now when we say it, ya just can't refute it: Hillary is better than the guys, ALL OF 'EM!
In addition to helping our local candidates win in November, let's make sure we DWC'ers do all that we can to put Hillary in her place--the White House!
YOU GO AND GO AND GO GIRL!!! WE'RE RIGHT BEHIND YOU ALL THE WAY!!!

Breakfast Recap
The regular breakfast meeting of the DWC took place last Friday at the Village Deli.
We hosted Dana Black, Democratic Candidate for House District 88, who decided to run for this office when she voted two years ago, and there was only one candidate for the office: the Republican (who has served for 30 years).
Dana inspired us all with her message, her amazing strength and energy! And she received many donations to her campaign!
Dana sent this note:
Thank you doesn't begin to express the gratitude I feel. The time spent with the Democratic Women's Caucus Friday morning was an unforgettable treat for me. You ladies have been motivating and encouraging this campaign from the first time we met and I am forever grateful for the positive energy you share with me.
Having the opportunity to share our campaign message with progressive forward thinking individuals is the motivating factor that pushes us to work hard to win this seat. The energy of your group is contagious, I wish I could bottle it up and bring some of it back up to Indy with me.
We have a lot of work to do in Indiana, and in order to make sure Hoosier families receive the necessary tools to be successful, we must work to change the super majority in the general assembly. Your support of progressive candidates like Penny Githens, Lacy Hollings and myself will help us be the voice of change Indiana needs. We can prevent the introduction of bills that deny women choices over their bodies. We can make sure our children are getting both the physical and mental nourishment they need to have prosperous lives. Together we can create the change we seek.
Thank you again for the incredible hospitality, and please let me know how I can help on any future endeavors. I don't live in Bloomington, but I am your neighbor for life.
(Indiana's Own Dana Black)

In the tradition of remembrance for those who lost their lives while serving in the US Armed Forces, we offer you this poppy.
BREAKFAST THIS FRIDAY! June 3, 7:30 am, Village Deli
The Indiana Statehouse still has only about 20% women discussing issues and legislating on our behalf. We MUST work to change that, and not just for gender equity. Don't you believe that we would not have HB1337 (the abortion bill) if there were more women, Democratic women in particular, working for families in Indiana? Do you believe RFRA would have passed with a few more women participating in the discussions?
On Friday we hope to introduce you to a few women running for these legislative positions, mainly from outside of our county. We hope you'll come, listen to how they can change the scene in Indy, and write them a check. You don't have to write huge checks, it's the collective activity that is so important. This act of bundling checks has served to encourage and support women who in turn work for us, all of us.
Frankly, we are lucky to have Matt Pierce and Mark Stoops, two feminists, to represent Monroe County in the Statehouse. Let's help them out by sending them some wonderful women colleagues! Let's help end the cycle of conservative, radically right men imposing ridiculous laws on women regarding what we do with our bodies and our lives.
OPPORTUNITY FOR TODAY and TOMORROW ONLY!
Our friend Araceli Gomez-Aldana wants to go to the Republican (yes, you heard right!) National Convention. We'd like to help her get there to ask questions about immigration, reproductive rights, and other issues that impact the Latino community. She's entered the Voto Latino "Crash The Parties" contest to win an all access press pass to the convention. People vote to pick the top ten applicants, who are then interviewed by a panel of celebrity judges to pick the overall winners.
Araceli is the Latino Programs and Outreach for the Community and Family Resources Department at the City of Bloomington, produces Hola Bloomington on WFHB, and has frequently attended DWC breakfasts and programs.
How cool would it be to have someone from Bloomington at the convention, reporting, facebooking, and tweeting what's really going on!

TODD ROKITA -- HE'S STILL AT IT!!
"Improving the Child Nutrition and Education Act of 2016"
Perhaps you read Todd Rokita's guest column in the HT yesterday, Sunday, May 29th. His reasoning reflects shortsightedness, and is the epitome of balancing the budget on the backs of poor children. Please call him and tell him that perhaps another program might be a better choice... we're sure you have good suggestions!
Todd Rokita, IN04, presented a bill to the House Committee on Education and Workforce that would change the way school eligibility for free lunches is figured.
It's a well-known fact that children learn when their tummies are not growling and when they have good nutrition at school. The best article on this issue can be found at the Huffington Post Political Page:
